Traditional vs Non-Traditional
Martial arts training follows one of two paths, one being traditional where emphasis is on technique and bringing out the best in individuals, the other non-traditional is more about students having fun in a high energy environment. Both have their place. There are very successful schools built on both platforms.
We are a traditional martial arts school that is based on honoring the past while bringing new and innovative teaching methods that offer more ways to disguise repetition than just playing loud music and yelling and screaming.
This is how we bring the tenets of Tang Soo Do, Loyalty, Respect, Justice, Trustworthiness, and Discipline to life for our students to learn and adopt in their own lives. These tenets have been handed down through generations from the Hwarang Warriors of the Sila Dynasty.
Martial arts training in either environment is tedious and filled with repetition. But if you expect to be able to fend off a bully or protect yourself in the mall parking lot, you need reflexes and techniques that are ingrained in you mind so you can act without thought. Some people refer to unnecessary distractions.
For us, following a “Traditional” track allows us to focus more on the individual and the quality of their training. Some look at the word traditional and think “Old School Values” of physical discipline to keep students focused. Exercise is supposed to be good for you so using push-ups, for example, as a form of punishment seems counter-intuitive to us. We are successful by redirecting behavior to something more constructive. We will also exclude student from certain activities as necessary.
We have a library of drills that students find fun and interesting, that focus on specific technical skills. Many of which work on a combination of goals that we review with students each time we set one up.
Experience tells us that Traditional Instruction is the best way to teach life-skills to our students. Skills like character, integrity, indomitable spirit, focus, humility, and compassion, to name a few. We teach martial arts to have a lasting impact on the lives of our students.
