Self-more
I had a conversation the other day with a parent of a student who has a mission in life to make everyone happy. A true “self-less” individual in a “selfish” society. As we talked, it became apparent that this student’s self-worth is derived from how others feel and think about her. So we coined a new phrase “self-more”.
The concept behind “Self-more” is finding fulfillment in yourself and not in the opinion of others. This is not a new concept; it’s been around a long time under different labels.
Life is a one-way street and individuals take this trip alone. Sure they have friends and family but at the end of the day, life is about what you make it, not what others tell you based on their experiences. Their experiences are just that “theirs”, not “yours”.
Feeling great about the path you are on is empowering, because you can change directions when YOU think it’s appropriate.
Self-more is about you taking control of the trajectory of your life and be happy with what you want to make your life. Only compare yourself to where you have been, not what others are doing since they are on their own path. Surround yourself with people that respect the path you are on and don’t judge your progress, rather they encourage you to be even better at what you are passionate about.
Martial arts training is the best way to learn this Self-more concept as training is individually executed not group executed, even though group classes are the most common training platform. We encourage students to feel good about their learning pace. Knowing that they have put in their best effort encourages them, despite whether they have a particularly good day or not. Feeling good about their results, that’s what is important.
